Black Friday, then Cyber Monday pale in comparison to the USA

A quick post to reflect on how underwhelming Black Fridays and Cyber Mondays are in Canada, compared to the US...

Well, it's true. In Canada, the discount rate is lower and people don't go crazy like in the US. Why should they anyway? To fight with others on items that are at best 30% off? Mind you these are also older versions of the newer releases...

Most things are similar in Canada and you get websites that help track the 'best' deals, just to name a few:

  • https://nationalpost.com/shopping-essentials/black-friday/best-black-friday-deals-in-canada-2021

So, it's still a big deal but it's a pale imitation of the US though. How I see it, from a newcomer to this country, is that I know there will be discounts and I wait to buy the things I was going to buy anyway, as there's lesser chance to get them at a discount during the year. And it has to be a good deal too. Depending on the urgency of the item and its discount, that's how I decide to make the purchase or not.

There are other things that are tempting to get, but the discounts are not great for me to be baited. One thing I did get though, was a cheaper deal for my mobile plan. It's expensive to get voice+data and black friday deals are indeed better, eg at Freedom mobile, I got a $10 off my $50 monthly bill (and it's a 20% off monthly). So... it is not that worth it (as a 50% off) but I am paying cheaper anyway.

Morale of this post: Black Friday deals are very meh in Canada but gives you the chance to save money on things you were needing anyway. In the US, the discounts are supposedly 50-70% off and if I were there, I'd have probably bought things I don't need.
