It's less busy than in Hong Kong, for sure...
So, our experience is based on Toronto's Subway and street cars, Calgary's C-train, England's London Underground, Scotland's underground, Singapore's, Taiwan's, Korea's and Hong Kong's MTR: it's related to the mass transit railway systems.
So, the comparison is solely based on where we came from and how this past experience influences the current perceptions of the public transport in Canada. Basically, in HK, Singapore, Taiwan and Korea, the mass transit railways are very efficient and you wait only an average of 5 mins (8 minutes at worst)? In Canada, in Calgary and Toronto, the trains are comparatively less busy and their frequencies are also fewer; Toronto's rail system is faster too. It's comparable to England's and Scotland's, although slightly better in terms of fewer disruptions (in the UK, lines get closed or have severe delays... Scotland's underground is more reliable though, compared to the London Underground).
In terms of cost, Calgary charges CA$3.5 while Toronto's $3.25. Within Downtown, Calgary's C-train is free and the $3.5 will cover the remaining journey outside that loop. Toronto's subway is not free but you can transfer to the street cars or buses.
In terms of cleanliness, well... in Canada, people are allowed to eat and drink on the train and please expect you may sit on a wet train seat.
Overall, the mass transit in Canada is quite fine. Please watch this space as we would also want to try the Ion trains in Waterloo, Montreal's Métro or some day, the Edmonton ETS or the Vancouver Sky Train!
