I am listing things I wish I knew before I booked my current driving instructor
Well, the biggest advice here is to not book a driving instructor who is busy, often fully booked or is fully booked quickly. Why? when you need to rebook your driving test, you will have a headache to find a time that fits your 'lo shifu'. Bear in mind that you are going to rent his/her car and you will need a 2hr lesson before...
Other things to consider:
- Find an instructor who is patient and helpful. Not someone abusive or who has anger issues or cigarette withdrawal symptoms. You may check Google reviews but don't look for the positive reviews. Assess whether you can put up with the worst things other people had to put up with - so check the 1 star reviews.
- If you are disgusted by cigarettes, then before booking any lessons, phone up and ask if the instructor is a smoker. Not only that, check whether the instructor smokes in the car. Some do and will cover it up with air fresheners, but the outcome is a more sickening smell.
- If you want to play it safe, better book a 2hr lesson instead of getting a bundle with the instructor. Suppose you don't get along with the instructor, it's not going to be a rose garden for the next lessons you prepaid.
- Choosing a registry for the test route: this is important. You may not know the routes but if you have friends in Canada already and in the province and they drive, they may advise you on the test routes where it's not tricky. By tricky, I mean the post signs are not hidden by trees or if they have been knocked down, they are put back up within 1 day (some tend to lie down for weeks if you ever checked Google street maps...). You may want to check the maps for schools and playground zones around the registry you are considering.
- Generally, best to learn to drive before winter. Winter days are short and dark. If you have never driven in snow before, then, this is something to watch out for too.
