Back in 2017...
Well, the story starts a few years ago, MrsHKer and I were comfortable in our lives in Hong Kong. Our jobs were stable and we were happy. Why did we contemplate about immigrating? Well, MrHKer was researching about part time studies and found a URL to the Federal Express Entry for skilled workers and thought it was worth a try, especially after checking our scores. Please note we did our application by ourselves and did not hire an immigration consultant.
We never thought we would leave HK. It's a great place, has wonderful people and everything is done smoothly (awesome service sector and hospitality). I cannot endorse how wonderful HK people are, having left the UK in 2008 to move to HK😊. But we did leave it as MrHKer found a job in Canada to make the move. Was it 'grab off the shelf' process? Not at all. Settling in Canada only happened 2 months ago.
Anyways, here is a rough timeline:
Sep 2017: MrHKer did his IELTS (and I have a page here for documenting the tribulations of getting certified for a language you speak, write and breathe in...) to be able to claim the points when applying for the language
Nov 2017: It started here with submitting our application
Dec 2017: Acknowledgement of receipt
Feb 2018: Invitation to apply
That was easy! Well, not the next parts though because as swift was it was for getting the invitation to apply (basically, it's for validating our points - remember this?). And the Canadian immigration is now telling us we can proceed (and pay the fees).
It looks such a long time ago, but the long journey starts with the first step:
